My early art studies at San Diego State University ranged from metal smithing, to furniture design, textile arts, and French. After developing an interest in screen printing, I went to New York to earn a degree with honors in Textile Print Design at The Fashion Institute of Technology ('89). For the next seven years I worked closely with a variety of companies on both coasts; designing prints for apparel and home furnishings. Concurrently with print design, I began Earthcouture, (92-96) an accessory business devoted to vintage-style hats and bags made from recycled fabrics.

Striving to offer more varied design work, and expand client range in commercial print design, I returned to school to receive a BFA with honors in Graphic Design from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco ('98). My varied education and experience led me to working with industrial designers and architects, designing exhibit/tradeshow booth graphics, packaging, comprehensive branding and business identity print materials. After two years of expanding my knowledge in typography and environments with Mauk Design in SF and another two with Design Site in Berkeley creating brands and collateral, I moved onto starting Mulch Design (born in 1999 in San Francisco, raised in Bend, Oregon, and now based in Portland).

Mulch is a business responding to issues of this generation. Many current modes of industry and production are outdated, and worse, degrading to our planet and people. Designers are ultimately responsible for choosing what they help to promote in print/web, and for the lifecycle of their designs, packaging, etc. It is Mulch's goal to create outstanding design campaigns which support sustainably-minded businesses and organizations, social justice and positive local or global pursuits.
